I'm trying to figure out a good placement for what would be my fourth or fifth tattoo, depending on how you count them. hopefully this counts as "literary", as well...

Finally! I grew up with my mother reading Esiotrot by Roald Dahl to me most nights before I went to sleep, and it's always been my favourite childhood book. For those who haven't had their coffee yet this morning, Esiotrot = Tortoise backwards =]

translated text or original text?

i've always been curious because i've thought about getting certain quotes in their original language. however, would i be better off with a translation if this is how i understand it?

thoughts, pretty please.

"Timshel" [Jan. 7th, 2010|01:11 am]

I would love to see anyone's Steinbeck tattoos, especially quotes or one-worders. I'm thinking about getting the word "Timshel" incorporated into a tattoo I'm planning but am not sure if I want just the word or a phrase from Lee's speech on timshel or "Thou mayest".

Help with Font and Placement [Jan. 7th, 2010|01:08 am]

literarytattoos

[ittybittyelise]
Hello! I've had my heart on getting this quote from The Little Prince tattoo'd on me since last summer: You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. The only thing I'm unsure about is font and placement.

In terms of font, I want something realy classy and neat looking. I'm really fond of Jane Austen and Renaissance, but I'm a bit paranoid that Jane Austen is going to bleed and become difficult to read over time.

Font Examples )

As for placement, I haven't the faintest idea. I like how the quote looks with the forever sandwiched between the two commas, so I don't really want to split it into two lines, but if it must be done, I'd like it split how I've done so in the image. I don't want it on my back because I have bacne scars (TMI, I know) and I don't want it on my stomach because I plan on having children in the future and I'm terrified of the tattoo abuse that would occur. Hmmm... I think that's around it. I know I sound really picky, but I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions you guys could offer and I promise to keep an open mind :)

[trudyy]

my new literary tattoo, my eighth in total.
inspired by the book the time traveler's wife. i believe it's actually from a poem by andrew marvell called to his coy mistress.
i adore this book and this line jumped out at me. i love what it means to henry and clare within the book but i'm not so sure it actually transpires to my life at all. but i'm okay with that, i don't think all of my tattoos need a meaning personalised to me other than i simply loved the idea. i don't want to try and attach meaning where there is nothing but adoration.
it's not a direct quote, i shortened it. the original is 'had we but world enough, and time'
anyway, enough babbling and on to the pictures.

I also got a Mickey Mouse logo behind my ear at the same time, but that's not literary :p

Tattoo Tuesdays! [Jan. 6th, 2010|12:04 pm]

[kissedbyarose21]
Hey literary lovers. My name is Sara and I currently run a literary blog with a friend of mine. We are participating in a new feature called 'Tattoo Tuesdays' (created by our good friend Tara) where we do a post featuring one kick ass person sporting a literary tattoo that we love.

Before we start just randomly picking pictures off the internetz we thought we would ask if there was any one out there willing to let us feature them! Nothing too hard we just put up the picture and hopefully a little blurb about your reasoning behind choosing it.

If any one would be excellent enough to offer up their tattoos for our readers viewing pleasure we would be forever grateful!! Just comment back here or shoot me a PM if you want to participate!! You all rock either way.

----EDIT----
Thank you so much to everyone that has offered their tattoos up so far!!! We are going to try to showcase certain people as well as themes  (exmp: Shakespeare tattoos).  If would be wonderful if those interested could either e-mail (scauvi1@gmail.com)  me with their pic/story or PM me.  Other wise I will try to contact you all slowly but surely as we get our posts up!! Thanks so much again.

Also be sure to check out 25HourBooks  the blog that started this excellent idea.  I am sure she would be happy to feature any of you as well.

got ink todaaayyyy. :D

i chose the musical CATS logo, the eyes, as my simple "swallow" chest piece. (they're placed where the swallows usually are.) this musical has been a part of my life for about nine years and i've so many good memories and influences from it that i made it a part of me forever.

.. how fitting. Now and Forever.

it's funny cuz that's the slogan. )

whatchu guys think? help on the tags, please!

there's an evil twin at [info]ihearttattoos

NOTE: i slapped this post up here because the songs from CATS came from a literary source. T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats was the inspiration for this play, so it definitely does have literary ties! hope that's peachy.

After years and years of planning, I have finally found a subject and design for my first tattoo, and had it done on the 30th of December.

Yes, it's a quote from Harry Potter, and while that is not the main reason why I got it, I am also aware that it is not everybody's cup of tea around here. Still felt the urge to share.

Boston and Providence tattoo parlors? [Jan. 5th, 2010|07:18 pm]

 Hey everyone,

Can anyone suggest good tattoo parlors in Provience, RI and Boston, MA?  I'd prefer PVD, but Boston is just a cheap train ride away, so Boston would work, too.

I'm getting a text tattoo.

Thanks for y'alls help!

Matilda Tattoo [Jan. 5th, 2010|07:57 pm]

So I've been reading this community for a while but didn't have a LJ account.  I read about someone else getting a Matilda tattoo and figured I would post a picture of mine.  I only have ooey-gooey pictures of it from right after completion, but it has healed wonderfully.  I brought in 4 different pictures and put them together into one picture on my upper back.  I got it done at Brooklyn Ink Spot in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Hope this picture works!

Tennyson rocks. [Jan. 5th, 2010|04:07 pm]

[feelslikehome23]
Okay so yesterday I finally went and got my first tattoo, after almost three years of contemplating it. In my Grade 11 Lit. class, we read the poem Ulysses by Lord Tennyson, and the quote "I am part of all that I have met." really jumped out at me. I've been through a lot in my 19 years, and so I decided it was a perfect quote to say that everything I do, everyone I meet, and everywhere I go makes up a part of who I am and, in turn, I do the same to them. Credit to Jessy at Adrenaline in Vancouver, BC for being awesome and super quick. Let me know what you think!

I don't know why some of the lines look blurry, but they're not actually.

Opinions on personal letters as tattoos [Jan. 5th, 2010|07:41 pm]
literarytattoos
[ohmydaisyg]
Hi there. I wanted to ask what people's feelings were on the concept of using quotes from people's real, personal letters as tattoos. Obviously the letter in question was eventually published, as part of a collection of letters- Letters from a Lost Generation by Vera Brittain, but I am unsure as to whether it is still a little inappropriate, perhaps, especially considering the letters were only published years after Brittain's death.

The phrase I would love to get as a tattoo is: "for it will be a part of me as long as I live and I shall remember, always."

This comes from a letter Brittain wrote and sent to her fiance Roland Leighton whilst he was fighting in World War One. (Roland went on to die in 1915 at the age of 20, from a gunshot wound.) A fuller quote, just to give a better idea of the context and meaning of the words is:

"Perhaps it will brighten the dark moments a little to think how you have meant to someone more than anything ever has or ever will. That which you have done and been will not be wasted; what you have striven for will not end in nothing, for it will be a part of me as long as I live and I shall remember, always"

So what do you think? Innapropriate? Weird? or not a problem?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Adding a dove to current quote tattoo and new hip quote tattoo? [Jan. 4th, 2010|10:25 pm]

literarytattoos

[icepwincessx3]
I have a few questions.

First off.. I have one tattoo. It says "alis volat propriis" on my upper back toward my left shoulder blade. I left some room above it to add something later on. Well later on has now come and I've been contemplating what I want to put above it. I have been thinking of getting a dove outline with a little red heart by it's head. Yay or nay? "alis volat propriis" means "she flies with her own wings" so i figured it would match nicely. The only other suggestion I've received is to literally get a pair of wings but being that my tattoo is not centered in the middle of my back, I don't think I would like the wings very much.

Secondly.. I originally thought of getting the dove on my hip bone with another quote underneath it but I have decided to now get the dove above my original tattoo so now I am at a loss for what I want on my hip/pelvic bone area. Any suggestions for that?

Also.. here are a few quotes I like and their translations.

"joie de vivre" - joy of living

"c'est la vie" - this is life

"vivre et adorer" - to live and to love

"protege moi" - protect me

Thank you in advance :)

Advice please! [Jan. 4th, 2010|09:24 pm]

literarytattoos

[wandersfound]
I'm planning on getting my first tattoo in about two weeks. It's important to me that I get it done on a specific day (will explain below), so I'd like to make an appointment. How would you suggest I do that? Should I call or should I go in person? How far in advance do you think is necessary? And how do I go about that? If I should go in person, can I just walk in and show them what I want?

My plan:
I want to get the Mark of Eld from Stephen King's The Dark Tower on my wrist.

King's books are one of the things that first made me interested in a career in writing (I'm now studying journalism in college). I picked a symbol from the Dark Tower, because my lucky number is 19, which if of course important in the series. Also, my birthday is 1/19/1991. So I'd like to have the tattoo done on my 19th birthday, this January 19th. And I'd like to have it done on my right wrist, since I'm right-handed and so that's the hand I use to write.

So I have the placement down, but I wouldn't mind hearing opinions about that either.
By the way, I hope lyrics count as "literary" here. Honestly I believe this reads more like a poem than a song.

Font Ideas for Lord Byron Quote [Jan. 3rd, 2010|12:53 pm]

[Current Location |United States, Minnesota]
[mood | contemplative]

Hello all,

I have decided to get a Lord Byron quote tattooed on my inner left forearm. It will be rather large, most likely covering my arm from elbow to wrist, or perhaps a little smaller.

The quote will be:
"A beautiful embodied storm"

and I am debating what font I should get the tattoo in. As it will be rather large, the letters will probably be spaced out and away from each other to avoid blending with age, but I am still wondering which font is the best idea.

Here are three fonts that I am looking at:

Which is the best one to get for a tattoo, in your opinion?

King Solomon Reference [Jan. 2nd, 2010|12:51 am]

[fictionpills]
I posted here a couple of weeks ago about my future tattoo. Back again for some final questions.

I went to the tattoo parlor about pricing and showed the girl where I would like to get it. She said that I shouldn't keep it as one line because in five years (considering the font I want) it will bleed together and it'll just look like a blob. So she said I should break it up.

this too
shall pass

So, question is, should I keep it the font I originally wanted or decide on this one instead (it's the third from the top)?

Also, placement, should I still keep it the inner forearm below my elbow even though the line is broken up or choose different placement to keep it as one line?

I just want to say thank-you to everyone who commented on my original post. You were all a big help!
